The sheep industry is one of the pillar industries for animal husbandry in Tianzhu County. It is an inevitable choice to cultivate a new sheep breed to meet adaption to the transformation of modern animal husbandry and market demands in Tianzhu County. It is also an effective way to increase the efficiency of local sheep industry and profit of herdsmen. In this study, the first generation population of Tianzhu Mutton Merino was selected as a test subject.By measuring and analyzing of cumulative growth, absolute growth, body size and wool quality,as well as observing of the puberty performance of the male and female lambs, this study aims to provide basic data for the evaluation of Tianzhu Mutton Merino core breeding population. In addition, the study will provide a theoretical basis for breeding and improving genetic parameters of Tianzhu Mutton Merino. The main results of this study are as follows:1.The birth weights, weaning weights,6 month and 9 month body weights for male and female Tianzhu Mutton Merino lambs were 4.25±0.45 kg and 3.93±0.38 kg,29.18±2.48 kg and 27.30±4.00 kg,38.55±2.95 kg and 35.35±kg,48.72±6.05 kg and 44.49±2.29 kg,respectively. The body weight at 10 months of rams was 53.56±7.88 kg.The average daily gain before weaning at 3 month,3-6 months,6-9 months for male and female Tianzhu Mutton Merino lambs were 277±29.10 g/d and 259.67±28.34 g/d,104.04±42 g/d and 89.44±36.45 g/d,118.04±82.65 g/d and 101.58±g/d,respectively.In the entire early development stage, the average daily gain in 0~6 month,0~9 month for male and female Tianzhu Mutton Merino lambs were 187.65±14.69 g/d and 174.52±14.89 g/d,164.34±24.20 g/d and 150.21±19.43 g/d,respectively.Through the measurement,it was found that all body measurements of rams at 10 month were well developed and reached the breeding goal.2.The analysis of early growth of rams and ewes of Tianzhu Meat Merino showed the a higher fitting degree in Gompertz model than that in Logistic model, indicating the Gompertz model could more accurately and theoretically fit the early growth rhythm of lambs. After 6th month, the measured values were smaller than predicted values, which indicated that the growth rate of lambs decreased in autumn and winter, and did not give full play to its growth potential. Therefore, the concentrated feed should be supplied in time when the quality of pasture grass is declining in autumn and winter, and the measures to keep sheep warm should be taken in time in order to prevent the weight loss when the temperature drops in winter.3.A total of 20 rams and 20 ewes were selected for puberty observation using adult ewes and rams teasing animals. The results showed that all the male lambs reached to puberty with an average age of 35.1 weeks. The partial female lambs got to puberty with an average age at 33.2 weeks.4.The wool samples of 110 rams with 10 month age from five breeding farms were taken for wool traits analyses. The results revealed that the average lengths of wool on the shoulder, back, thigh, and body side were 7.92±1.30 cm,7.74±1.34 cm,7.60±1.17 cm and 7.41±1.10 cm,respectively. The crimp ratio, curl recovery rate, and crimp elastic rate and average wool fiber diameter were 13.91±3.99%,13.92±5.12%,and 88.28±4.37%,21.01±1.68 ?m,respectively. The strength indexes, including breaking force, breaking strength, fracture, elongate length, and the elongation rate were 6.60±1.40 cN,1.32±0.30 cN/dtex,158.20±41.46 ?J,4.29±1.04 mm and 41.60±11.00%,respectively.
