Objective:This study aimed to compare serum soluble ST2(s ST2) between hypertensive patients with left ventricular hypertrophy and hypertensive patients without left ventricular hypertrophy to explore whether s ST2 can be served as a new marker for risk stratification and prognosis for hypertensive patients. Methods:A total of 113 hypertensive patients were included, left ventricular mass index(LVMI) and ventricular wall thickness(RWT) of patients were measured echocardiographically. Patients were divided into left ventricular hypertrophy group(concentric hypertrophy and eccentric hypertrophy) and non left ventricular hypertrophy group(normal geometric pattern and concentric remodeling) according to LVMI and RWT; serum ST2 levels were determined by Elise method and compared in the different groups.Result:Averaged serum ST2 levels in the left ventricular hypertrophy group elevated significantly as compared to the non left ventricular hypertrophy group. There was no significant difference of s ST2 between normal geometric pattern and concentric remodeling, or between concentric hypertrophy and eccentric hypertrophy. Compared with normal geometric pattern or concentric remodeling, geometric patterns with concentric hypertrophy and eccentric hypertrophy had higher s ST2 level.Logistic regression analysis showed that systolic blood pressure and serum s ST2 level were correlation factors of left ventricular hypertrophy, and serum s ST2 level showed a stronger correlation than systolic blood pressure.Spearman rank correlation analysis showed that serum s ST2 was associated with left ventricular mass index(LVMI)(r = 0.413, P < 0.01).Conclusions:Serum ST2 levels was closely associated with left ventricular hypertrophy in hypertensive patients, s ST2 is a correlation factor of left ventricular hypertrophy.
