Objective:To explore the efficacy and safety of portal vein embolization in patients with hepatic alveolar echinococcosis. Methods:From September 2014 to February2017,62 patients with hepatic alveolar echinococcosis were treated.11 of these patients were not candidate for surgery because the rement liver was deemed to bo to small.PVE was performed to these 11 patients, comprised 5 men and 6 women, with an average age of(46.75±17.26)(21~68)y.Other 51 patients with sufficient rement liver volume underwent radical surgery without previous PVE,comprised 27 men and 24 women, with an average age of(39.98±9.36)(22~ 66)y.Liver volume and liver functions were recorded after the procedure. The operative outcomes were compared between patients with or without PVE.Results:PVE was successfully performed in all 11 patients. The adverse reactions included transient hepatic function impairment and recovered soon. The average FLRV increased from(463.38±108.59)?3 to(702.42±137.27)?3(t=-14.16 P=0.000002).all11 patients underwent radical surgery. There was no significant difference in terms of the gender?age?ethnic composition?Preoperative drainage?method of radical surgery?preoperative liver function?postoperative liver function?operative time?blood loss?average hospital stay?postoperative time with the drainage tube?rate of morbidity and in-hospital mortality between the PVE group and non-PVE group.During the follow-up period(7~25months),all 11 patients were nidus-free survived. Conclusions:PVE is a safe and effective procedure for patients with hepatic alveolar echinococcosis,,and can increase the indications of radical surgery.
