Objective:The purpose of this study is to isolate the chemical constituents and evaluate their cytotoxic activity of Polygonum avicularc L.Methods:The dried aerial parts of P,aviculare were extracted with 75%EtOH by reflux repeability, and the EtOH solution was partitioned with petroleum ether,EtOAc and n-BuOH,successively.The EtOAc and n-BuOH extracs were purified to afford conpounds by various column chromatography. The structures of the compounds were elucidated on the basis of their physicochemical and spectroscopic investigations. All the compounds were determined their cytotoxic activity on human cervical(HeLa)and human lung carcinoma(A549)cell lines by MTT assay. Results:Isolated twenty-one compounds from P.Aviculare.The structures of these compounds were identified by comparing their physicochemical and spectral data with those of published in literatures as trans-hydroxycinnamic acid(1),cis-hydroxycinnamic acid(2),gallic acid(3),juglanin(4),quercetin(5),myricetin(6),avicularin(7),quercetrin(8),kaempferol-3-O-?-L-rharnnoside(9),myricitrin(10),aviculin(11),phenol(12),kaempferol(13),luteolin(14),isomyricitrin(15),Glucosyringic acid(16);kaempferol-3-O-?-D-glucosylside(17),1,6-Di-O-galloy-?-D-glucopyranose(18),2"-galloylmyricitrin(19),vitexin(20)and isovitexin(21).Among them compounds 1?2?9?12?15?16 and 18 were isolated the first time from this plant All the compounds were evaluated cytotoxicities and compound 3,6,13 and 14 showed cytotoxity against human cervical(HeLa)and human lung carcinoma(A549)cell lines. Conclusion:This thesis has made intensive study on the chemical const:ituents of P.aviculare and elucidated the matearial basis for its anticancer activity in vitro. But it needs further study and discovery new lead compounds with good anticancer activity.
