A Study Of C-E Translation Of Cultural Relic Texts:Problem Analysis And Countermeasures

With Skopos theory as its theoretical foundation, this thesis is a study on translation countermeasures of cultural relic texts. This thesis investigates four museums in Zhejiang before finding out four kinds of translation problems in them:(1) irrational deletion of important information;(2) over-deficiency of necessary explanation;(3) lack of consistency in names of cultural relics;(4) cultural relic information misunderstanding. These translation problems of cultural relic texts not only hinder cultural relics'appreciation but also influence transmission of Chinese traditional culture.Under the guidance of Skopos theory, this thesis explores functions and types of cultural relic texts, translation brief of cultural relic texts and translation principles of target texts before probing into countermeasures against the above-mentioned problems. Then, according to translation brief and principles of cultural relic texts, it proposes practical countermeasures against these problems. When overcoming irrational deletion of important information, translators should first take target readers into account and then select different cultural relic information by such methods as omitting, simplifying or adding. When overcoming over-deficiency of cultural explanation, translators should bridge cultural gaps by adopting transliteration plus explanation, literal translation plus note and paraphrasing. When overcoming lack of consistency in names of cultural relics, translators should ensure the consistency in cultural relic terminologies' translation and modifier orders by adopting established popular translated names and obeying language convention. When overcoming cultural relic information misunderstanding, translators become the key point in making effort to improve their working attitude, enhance their language and culture competence and enlarge their professional knowledge. All in all, these countermeasures should regard the intended function as the main guidance.This thesis concludes that:C-E cultural relic text translation should be target reader-centered and intercultural communication-oriented; the countermeasures can effectively solve four types of problems in current C-E cultural relic text translation.
