In the boom of economic globalization, science and technology plays a very important role.As a part of science and technology, Intellectual Property Protection has drawn more and more attention and inventors and enterprises also realize the importance of the Intellectual Property Protection. To protect his/her invention in other countries, the inventor must file a patent application to the WIPO(world intellectual property organization). As a scientific and technological power in the world, according to the WIPO report in 2013, China took over Germany to be the third highest-ranking country for patent application. We can see that patent translation has been an important project in China.Based on the author's patent translation practice in Beijing RWS Science & Technology Information Consultancy Co., Ltd.(hereinafter referred to as RWS), this report provides a description of a patent, translation purpose, translation process and case analysis in details. The author takes an application from Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. In the area of network coexistence for the translation project as part of the MTI course, and the content of source text mainly introduces a method, reader and RFID system for contending channels under network coexistence. When a plurality of networks exist, all devices in a network can contend for a channel and coordinate with each other to avoid the occurrence of a collision as much as possible.Under the guidance of semantic translation theory of Newmark, the report attempts to study the translation of a patent with examples from communication patents, analyzing them at the lexical, syntactical, as well as discourse level. When translating a patent application, the translator paid close attention to the articles, singular and plural forms, understanding of complicated sentences, logical expression as well as some legal implications. Based on the translation project that forms part of the report, the author hopes it can shed some light on patent translation studies, and can benefit MTI students and translators who are interested in patent translation.
