In recent years, the demand for Chinese-English translation of patent applications is growing, which brings not only more opportunities but also more challenges for translators. Therefore, the study on the Chinese-English translation of patent applications, chosen in this project, is practically valuable.Newmark's semantic translation theory indicates that the target text should preserve the meaning, characteristics and style of the source text. Patent applications are concise in language and have various professional terms. Besides, its most important function is to convey semantic meanings, which just coincides with Newmark's semantic translation theory. Therefore, Newmark's semantic translation theory is applicable to the translation of patent applications.From the perspective of Newmark's semantic translation theory, this report analyzes the linguistic features of patent applications and puts forward three practical translation methods. Linguistic features of patent applications are mainly analyzed from lexical features and syntactic features. The three translation methods put forward are improvement of Chinese patent applications, literal translation assisted by liberal translation and creative translation.
