With the rapid development of science and technology, intellectual propertyprotection has drawn more and more attention. Patent, defined as being a setofexclusive rightsgranted by asovereign stateto an inventor or assignee for a limitedperiod of time in exchange for detailed public disclosure of aninvention, is one of themeans to protect intellectual property. Nowadays, information technology (IT) entersinto its flourishing period and more and more relevant inventions and innovationspring up in abundance.If an inventor wants his/her invention protected, the inventormust file patent application in the country; furthermore, if the inventor wants theinvention to be protected in other countries, the inventor must file the patentapplication in WIPO (world intellectual property organization), in whichprocesspatent translation plays an important role, because the inventor needs topresent the English version of the patent application.Taking file application from TencentTechnology Company, especially applicationabout information security as an example, the writer aims to develop some strategiesabout IT patent translation. This report is based on the writer’s translation experiencein Beijing RWS Science&Technology Information Consultancy Co., Ltd.(hereinafter referred to as RWS) during his internship. In order to improve the qualityof IT patent translation, this report provides explicit description of the task, itspurpose, its process and case analysis. In the case analysis, under the guidance ofcross kingdom information mapping theory, the report attempts to study thetranslation of a patent with examples from IT patents, analyzing at the lexical level,syntactical level and idiomatic expressions, as well as the translation relating to patentlaws. When translating a patent, a translator should pay close attention to theunderstanding of complicated sentences, the use of article, the logic of an inventionand relevant laws of the patent. The writer hopes that the strategies provided in thisreport which are based on the cross kingdom information mapping theory will beuseful in IT patent translation, which will benefit MTI students and translators whoare interested in patent translation.
