Due to the interference of Chinese, Chinese culture and thinking method, Chinese English-learners would write and translate in such kind of English that doesn’t conform to English idiomatic usage. Chinglish is inevitable in the process of English learning, and even appears in popular publications written by famous teachers of famous training centers, which makes bad influence on Chinese English learners. Though master or doctor candidates have better mastery of English than others, Chinglish also.often appears in their theses and dissertations. The author finds it necessary to study Chinglish in popular publications, theses and dissertations, so as to help Chinese English learners avoid it. The author collects many typical Chinglish examples in popular publications, theses and dissertations and she is also the first one studying on it.The thesis consists of five parts. The first part is the introduction, in which the author introduces the background, objective and research Significance, general structure and methodology of the research. The second part is the literature review. The author redefines Chinglish on the basis of the previous study, and summarizes the characteristics of Chinglish. To better clarify the concept of. Chinglish, the author also makes the distinction between it and China English. She finds that China English is a comprehensive system, and the difference between it and the Standard English is vocabulary. However, Chinglish is arbitrary in the vocabulary, grammar, etc, and it varies from person to person according to their English proficiency. There are many theories which could be applied to study Chinglish, out of which, the author holds that the Theory of Sense has its own advantages in studying and avoiding Chinglish. She analyzes the causes of Chinglish from the Theory of Sense:incomplete interpretation, incomplete de-verbalization and inappropriate re-expression, then she illustrates the necessity of avoiding Chinglish. The third part is the theoretical framework. The author reviews the emergence and development of the theory and illustrates the major opinions systematically. It first comes up with that translation is communicative actions, whose task is translating the intention of the author; the Triangle Model including interpreting, de-verbalization and re-expression and the translation criteria. The author thinks that with the guidance of the Theory of Sense, the version could get rid of Chinese to some extent. The fourth part is the main body of the thesis. Chinglish collected from popular English publications, theses and dissertations is studied from aspects of redundancy, lack of words, misuse of words, sentence structure, idiomatic expression, etc, and then versions which comply with English codes with the guidance of the Theory of Sense are given, so as to achieve faithfulness to the intention of the author, the target language and the target readers, which are the translation criteria advanced by the Theory of Sense. The last part is the conclusion of the thesis. The new findings are summarized and solutions to avoid Chinglish are given. The author also mentions the limitation of the thesis and the future proposals. This research proves the efficiency of the Theory of Sense on avoiding Chinglish, and it is also a complement to the theory. Hopefully this thesis will help authors of English publications, master and. doctor candidates avoid Chinglish, arid increase people’s attention on it, making trans-cultural communication fluent between China and English-speaking countries. |
