Application Of The Theory Of Sense In Subtitle Translation Of Film Godfather

Subtitle translation has played a unique role in translation history. It strengthens thecultural exchange and development between countries. A good subtitle translation work is notonly faithful to the original language, but also be artistic and creative as original. When theaudience watches the subtitled version of film, they hope to get the sense equivalent messageas the source language convey. As for this point, the Theory of Sense is applicable to guidethe subtitle translation, and the corpus analyzed is the classic American film Godfather.The Theory of Sense was originated in the1960s in France. It is established by DanicaSeleskovitch after her successful conference interpreting practice. In spite of it is a kind oforal interpretation theory, it doesn’t mean it is only fit for oral interpretation. Many scholarshave applied it into literature, technical and commercial texts. The main idea of the Theory ofSense is translator should focus more on the sense than the words of the original. Throughdeverbalizing the source language, the translator produces the same cognitive and estheticeffects on readers as the original language does. In order to reach this goal, the translationprocess was divided into three steps: comprehension, de-verbalization, and reformulation.This paper is consisted of introduction, principal part, and conclusion. The first chapteris introduction part which briefly presents the purpose and significance of my study, showingthe structure of the paper at the same time. The main part is divided into four chapters. Thesecond chapter discusses the detailed information related to the subtitle translation, whichcontain the historical study of subtitle translation and its features. The third chapter presents ageneral introduction of the Theory of Sense, including its research development situation andessence of the theory. It mentions three-step translation process and advocate its translationstandards. My intention is to present the characteristics and advantages of the Theory of Sense.The forth chapter is to make a case study of subtitle translation of film Godfather.The fifthchapter presents some strategies of de-verbalization applied into subtitle translation.The lastpart is the conclusion of this paper.In this chapter, I summed up the whole paper and came upwith thought about this topic.For the past years, few people have applied the Theory of Sense into the subtitletranslation. With the theory provided as well as the analysis done in this thesis, it is sincerelyhoped that this thesis can offer a better understanding as well as a new insight into subtitletranslation so that subtitle translation in our country can be further developed with betterquality to serve its function of intercultural communication.
