Lawrence is an ill-fated writer in English literary history. In his entire life, he has suffered a lot of setbacks. His works were criticized by critics and not accepted by the public during his lifetime. However, his works has stood the test of time.Finally he wins the respect and recognition of the later generations. Lady Chatterley's Lover is his last novel. It describes the complicated ethic relationship between Connie, Clifford and Mellors, the confusion that the people had during the time of industrial civilization and the damage to nature caused by the war and civilization.This thesis is based on the theory of ethical literary criticism. It intends to demonstrate ethical thoughts implied in this novel through the analysis of the ethic relationships. The analysis is specific to three kinds of relationship, human-society relationship, human-other relationship and human-nature relationship. It discloses the evil side of industrial civilization and its damage to human and nature. It points out Lawrence's praise for nature's beauty and his advocate of returning to nature.The complete thesis contains five chapters:The first chapter is an introduction. It introduces Lawrence, the novel Lady Chatterley's Lover, a previous study on the novel as well as the ethical literary criticism.Chapter two, chapter three and chapter four are the main parts. Chapter two analyzes how the society influences human's spirit and action as well as Connie and Mellors's rebellious spirit. It demonstrates that human has the responsibility to the development of the society. And only when the society is stable, can human live an enjoyable life.Chapter three mainly analyzes two kinds of relationship which are man-woman relationship and friendship. The praise of Mellor's viewpoints on man-woman relationship and Connie's view on friendship represents Lawrence's hope for a warm and equal human-other relationship.Chapter four seeks the harmonious human-nature relationship. On the one hand, human is opposite to nature. Human's activities in industrial civilization destroy and pollute the nature. On the other hand, the relationship between human and nature is harmonious and uniform. Human can restore humanity through the infection of nature's spirit of life. It requires human to coordinate the relationship with nature and protect the nature while enjoying the grace of nature.Chapter five is a conclusion. Based on the analysis of previous chapters, the conclusion is drawn to the manifestation that Lady Chatterley's Lover has a narrative of rich ethical thoughts. The novel gives a vivid description of the three main ethic relationships and manifests the hope of a justified society and harmonious social relationships. In the society of today, the social relationships are becoming tense and the environment is becoming worse. The ethical thoughts of harmony give hints to the society of today.
