A Report On The Translation Of Wallace Stevens’ Home Letters Travel Separation

The subject of this translation task, the home letters called Travel Separation from Wallace Stevens, one of the greatest poet in modern America, to his wife Elsie Stevens, comes from the author’s supervisor, under whose guidance the author has completed the whole translation task. And the translation material is also based on the research subject concerning Wallace Stevens’ letters of the author’s supervisor. Meanwhile, with the help of certain related articles and essays, the author combines what he has learned on translation both in and out of class, and eventually, completes the translation report.In the process of the translation task, with the help of some related periodicals, the Internet, and several books concerning home letters, the author firstly had a clear understanding of Wallace Stevens and the writing features of letters, thus enough preparation before translation has been made. In addition, during the translation, the author has emphasized the text analysis from three aspects, namely cultural, psychological and linguistic features, including the differences of appellations within Chinese and Western home letters, the linguistic differences and cultural shock between Chinese and English in home letters, etc. Meanwhile, based on the text analysis above, the translation report consists of the author’s translation theories and methods acquired from class during the last two years, and several innovative opinions concerning home letters translation concluded by himself, namely the analysis of the tone and mental state of the writer in home letter translation, proficient and accurate use of four-character phrases which are more understandable to the target language readers.Through the translation process, the author has improved both his translation and scientific research ability, hoping that it could develop a certain reference and guidance for other translators when translating such type of text and material.
