| A large number of researches and explorations into bids have been carried out due to the rapid development of international bidding, one of the important trading methods for goods, projects and services worldwide. However, many focuses have been given to its stylistic features as well as translation methods of terms and complicated clauses, with limited explorations on interconnections between linguistic theories and translation, as well as application of linguistic interpretation to C hinese- English bids’ translation. After careful consideration, thematic progression, a linguistic theory proposed by F. Danes, has been adopted as the theoretical guidance of this translation report for the reason that this theory can facilitate discourse coherence and be regarded as the skeleton of a text during the translation process from source text(ST) to target text(TT).This report is based on the author’s translation of “Bids for Procurement of Medical Equipment for XX Hospital of Hunan Province ” and consists of four parts: introduction, task process description, case analysis and conclusion, among which the case analysis part is the essence of this report. In this part, the author of the present paper conducts a detailed analysis about the problems confronted in the translation process, such as differences between C hinese and English thematic progression and different stylistic features of Chinese and English bids. Due to their morphological differences, themes often overlap subjects in English while topic themes and anaphoric omissions of subjects are particular to C hinese although there are similarities in textual information structure in these two languages. As a result, Chinese topic themes, anaphoric omissions of subjects and corresponding transform methods are t he main difficulties when translating C hinese bids into English. In order to deal with these difficulties, this article uses the following methods under the guidance of F. Danes’ "Thematic Progression” during the process of the translation practice. On one hand, thematic progression of ST should be preserved for the purpose of maintaining writer ’s underlying concern as well as functional equivalence to a maximum extend. O n the other hand, due to the morphological differences of these two languages, thematic progression of some clauses may be changed for the conversion between C hinese topic themes or zero theme and English subject themes with the methods of structural shifts. This report, in a certain degree, has some significance for future study on translation of bids for procurement of medical equipment. |
