This paper has selected about ten thousand words from Polar Code Advisory as the practical material for the Chinese translation. In the process of translation, the author found that the differences in grammatical structure between English and Chinese are obvious, which make the translation unable to follow the same format of the original text or correspond to each other with the same structure. To ensure the Chinese translation be accurate as well as conforming to Chinese expressions,it is necessary to know about related translation theory and put it into exercises, analyzing the differences of the sentence structure and pragmatic situations between the two languages and applying with proper translation shifts. This report emphasizes on the induction and conclusion of the specific application of structural shifts in Chinese translation of maritime literature.Guided by Carter Ford's translation theory, the author found that the theory of structural shift plays an important role in the practice of Chinese translation of Polar Code Advisory. This paper mainly discusses the specific application of structural shifts with the following four aspects:the sentence structural shifts, the voice shifts, the negative/affirmative structural shifts, and shifts between impersonal subject and personal subject.Among them, the sentence structural shifts include the shifts between different phases, the adjustment of words order and the restructuring of sentence structure;the voice shifts mainly talk about the conversion of English passive sentences into Chinese active sentences and the shift of English passive sentences into Chinese non-subject sentences;the shifts between impersonal subject and personal subject means to transfer English impersonal subject into Chinese personal subject;the negative/affirmative structural shifts involving the inter-conversion of English and Chinese negative/affrmative structures as well as the shifts of English negation structure. It is hoped to make some references for the Chinese translation of maritime texts through summarizing and analyzing the above translation methods.
