This paper is a practical report on English-Chinese translation guided by Catford's translation theory. The case analysis of this report are selected from the E-C translation practice, chapter 2 and chapter 6 of the book Open Innovation. The term"translation" is firstly mentioned in Catford's A Lingistic Theory of Translation, which studies the translation mechanism of the level and category of language under the framework of systematic grammar. This theory clearly analyzes the similarities and differences about words and sentences grammatically among different languages, and gives the method of how to do the translation shifts, which has a prominent effect on translation studies in the later period. The purpose of this report is to analyze the linguistic characteristics and differences between the source language and the target language, and to explore the application and importance of category shifts. The report describes the whole process of translation, summarizes the development of translation shift theory and studies the structural-shifts,class-shifts,unit-shift and intra-system shift in Catford's translation shift theory through detailed case analysis. The author believes that Catford's translation shift theory can help translator overcome the language barriers and translate the source text in a more smooth and fluent way on the basis of faithfulness to the original text, making the target text more readable.
