In other words, if one intends to know ‘where to go', it is a must for him to be aware ‘where he is' and the like.” Otl Aicher states.With the development of cities, in our life, one can especially when going out, notice way-finding systems, which lead us to get information with effective illustrations or texts. The systems provide us proceeding methods and means, enabling people to identify the environment and know “where to go?” and “how to get there?” The way-finding system is indispensable and as part of city environment, it greatly enhances image of cities and regions, improves service and life quality and beautifies the space. Its distinctive designing language and artistic form may strengthen the combination image of environment and space. This thesis, based on this background of times and connotations, makes researches and explores the modern way-finding system types.The purpose of research is to lead people to know better the types of modern way-finding systems, namely the designing of way-finding system in our life. This paper adopts systematic, human-oriented, case studies, focusing on the researches of space, information and the application of public way-finding systems generated by interpersonal behaviors and interactions. This research covers various spaces, like transportation?office?gymnasium?commercial areas?sightseeing sites?hospitals and so on. This essay includes five parts: Part One introduces the background, meaning, research content and methodology; the second part starts from the concept of way-finding system, and plays the role of theoretical support, which interprets the way-finding system's concept, function, classification and development; Part Three is the practical explanations which focus on the types of modern system types, different designing principles and standards, and meanwhile, combined with modern research achievements and excellent case studies, explains the practical application of various way-finding systems; in the fourth part, this paper explores the development trend and prospect, and it predicts its outlook in future; the fifth part is the conclusion of this essay.Based on the comprehension of way-finding system, this paper explores the functions?designing principles?types and measures.
