Translation Methods For Sport Terminologies And Related Expressions

Stephen Gerrard's autobiography, My Story, is chosen as the project of the translation practice. Through the analysis of the source text in English and the target text in Chinese, some conditions during translating sport terminologies and related expressions are introduced in the process of translation in the thesis. The thesis also elaborates the choice of translation methods and seeks to summarize the methods able to be applied in the translation of terminologies and expressions so as to guide sport texts translation.As flowing sports texts from other countries are introduced to China, the demands of sports texts translation are increasing. However, some problems which affect translation quality occur in the process of the translation of sports texts. The translation of terminologies and related expressions which appear frequently is one obvious problem during sports texts translation. In actual translation, terminologies and related expressions are often translated inaccurately. If the translator does not have a clear understanding of sports during the translation of terminologies, mistakes may be caused. Besides, the inaccurate translation of related expressions, such as idioms and proverbs may be caused by cultural conflict. The features of sports texts will be analyzed from the aspects of grammar, lexis and semantics in order to explore problems in the actual translation of terminologies and related expressions and solutions will be sought.It is observed that during the translation of terminologies and related expressions, the translator needs to grasp their meaning in certain sports and context by searching background information and authoritative material so that the accuracy of translation can be ensured according to authoritative standards. When translating related expressions, the translator should pay attention to the difference between English and Chinese in language and culture and complete the translation by means of compensation and other means under the condition that the essence of the source text is understood.
