The Information Theory focuses on studying information processing and transfer. Translation, as an inter-lingual communication activity, involves complex language transformation and information transfer. The basic concepts of the theory also apply to explaining the translation process. Previous studies regard "omission" as incorrect. However, recent studies treat it as an effective strategy in simultaneous interpretation. This paper analyzes interpretation using basic concepts of the Information Theory. In the empirical study part, six interpreters were invited to do a control experiment. By detailed quantitative analysis and qualitative analysis, the author finds that in the Chinese-English SI of impromptu speeches, information points vary in values. Complete omission and summary omission strategies may be used according to the value of information. The completeness of primary information in translation correlates positively with the frequency of the use of omission strategies. This paper attempts to provide reference to interpretation teaching from the perspective of information theory, and enrich the research of interpretation under the Information Theory framework.
