A Contrastive Study Of The Separable Words In The General Chinese Dictionaries And The Foreign-oriented Chinese Dictionaries

The study of Separable Words of Modern Chinese has been a hot topic in academia and it’s also both the key and difficulty of teaching Chinese as a second language. In the study of Separable Words, we talked more about the study of its ontological study and how to deal with them in teaching Chinese as a second language while we barely pay attention in the study of Separable Words in The Foreign-oriented Chinese Dictionary and The General Chinese Dictionary. The ways they deal with the Separable Words are not the same in all kinds of Chinese dictionaries though most dictionaries only describe this language unit directly and avoid discussing this controversial issues. So does The Modern Chinese Dictionary(6th edition).It only marks these words without discussing whether the Separable Words that contains are words or phrases. However, The Business center learning Chinese Dictionary clearly marked out ‘word of the phrase’ and divide its structure types while it doesn’t consider about that problem either. Thus, we can easily extract the Separable Words from those two dictionaries.After examining the characteristics and status of these two dictionaries, this paper takes the dictionaries as the representative of The Foreign-oriented Chinese Dictionary and General Chinese Dictionary and discuss the characteristics and differences between the twos. This paper attempts to explore three main issues, the first one is the situation of the Separable Words in those two dictionaries, the second one is the definition situation of Separable Words in those two dictionaries and the third one is about making suggestions to the first two issues. This paper mainly adopts qualitative analysis and quantitative analysis, materials analysis and comparative analysis to analysis the two dictionaries in order to find out the similarities and differences between them and figure out the reasons for these differences.The first chapter of the thesis discusses the background and basis of this study. Then it summarizes the previous studies of the Separable Words in both kinds of the dictionaries and briefly introduces the significance of the topic and research methods of the thesis.In the second chapter, the paper makes a statement of a controversial issues that how to define this kind of words and the structure types of them and lists the various different views on the above issue. Then it discusses the developments of the Separable Words in ontological study and teaching Chinese as a second language in recent years, and take an overview of academic achievement has been made and the deficiencies that remainsAccording to the Separable Words extracts from the two dictionaries in the fourth chapter, we build two closed corpora and then we established more by the contrast generated sub-corpus according to these two basic corpus. Through the establishment of the corpus, we got a variety of data of the Separable Words in these two dictionaries. In this case, we are aware of the common and different Separable Words in two dictionaries. This creates the data and the foundation for our corpus which may lead us to further comparative study.In the fourth chapter article first introduces the theoretical results of Senses studies and then compares the generalization and division of Senses in common Separable Words’. Accordingly, we studied about the Separable Words which are inconsistent in Senses and division of Senses, and tried to find the reasons for this difference.In the fifth chapter, the paper described the research status of interpretation mode, and the listed the different views of scholars in this issue. Furthermore, the paper selected a view of classification to the interpretation mode which fit to our comparative study and research and present and explain this approach. After that, this paper divided the common Separable Words in the way above respectively in order to get the data and Senses of each type.In the last part, this paper analyzes both of the two dictionaries’ problems in dealing with Separable Words and then make suggestions for contemporary lexicography according to the advantages and disadvantages in dealing with Separable Words by the two dictionaries. Finally, the paper made a summary and reflection throughout the study in order to plays a role in the promoting of the study of Separable Words in The Foreign-oriented Chinese Dictionary and The General Chinese Dictionary.
