In the microscopic structure of a dictionary, definition is the core and soul part. Definition is the lifeline of a dictionary. As a Chinese foreign learners' dictionary, definition is also the central work which it compiles. The start of learners' dictionary is late, it hasn't get rid of the influence of traditional understanding dictionary in the macroscopic structure and the microscopic structure, also it is at the initial stage of theory criticism research. The insufficiency of fundamental research lead to a series of definition questions in the dictionary compiling practice. This article take threemonolingual Chinese foreign learners' dictionaries which are typical as the object of study——"The Commercial Press Learner's Dictionary of Contemporary Chinese","A Learner's Chinese Dictionary: Illustrations of the Usages" and "A Dictionary of Chinese Usage:8000 Words", and takethe most authoritative national language dictionary of Chinese——"The Modern ChineseDictionary"(fifth edition) as reference, make comparative research on verb definition, take the 298 common verbs selecting from "The Syllabus of Graded Words and Characters for Chinese Proficiency" as sample. We use the combination methods of the qualitative analysis and quantitative analysis to analyze the contents of definition and methods of definition, talking about the innovation and questions which apply in current monolingual Chinese learners' dictionary, based on this, proposing the solution using the linguistics and the lexicography.The first chapter is foreword part. first, it introduce the reason and significance of this article; then it summarize the compiling situation and carry on the correlation research summary; at last it introduce the content and research method of this article.The second chapter has researched into the definition content of dictionaries which have been chosen, talking about the innovation and questions of definition content, analyzing the principle of the explanation content which Chinese learners 'dictionary should follow..The third chapter has researched into the definition methods, comparing with "The Modern Chinese Dictionary", and analyzing the success and failure in the definition methods, as well as pointing out how to improve the definition methods of Chinese learners' dictionary by using the fruit of modern linguistics and the good points of English learners' dictionary.The forth chapter is inclusion, it mainly summarize this research and talk about how to improve it in the future.According to our discussion about definition content and definition methods, we hope that it can exert a profound influence on the definition compiling of Chinese foreign learners' dictionary.
