With positive emotions and verbal working memory domains being consistently activated by a goal related to social interaction may develop into a functional relationship between positive emotions and verbal working memory(Beckes & Coan, 2011). With negative emotions and spatial working memory being consistently activated by a goal related to threat or error detection may develop into a functional relationship between negative emotions and spatial working memory(Mather & Sutherland, 2011). When emotion promotes cognitive tendencies that are goal incompatible with task demands, greater cognitive effort is required to perform well, and self-control resources become depleted, impairing behavioral control, that is condition of emotion-cognition misalignment(e.g., approach/spatial, withdrawal/verbal),when emotion promotes cognitive tendencies that are goal compatible with task demands, less cognitive effort is required to perform well, improving behavioral control, that is condition of emotion-cognition alignment(e.g., approach/verbal, withdrawal/spatial)(Storbeck, 2012;Storbeck, Davidson, Dahl, Blass, & Yung, 2015). According to the motivational dimensional model of affect, affect can be divided into approach-motivated positive states and withdrawal-motivated negative states. Thus, the current research examined whether self-control resources become depleted and influence subsequent behavior when Emotions different in the dimension of motivational intensity tunes an inappropriate cognitive tendency.Experiment1 examined whether self-control resources become depleted and influence subsequent behavior when participants perform verbal working memory or spatial working memory under high and low approach-motivated positive emotions. Experiment2 examined whether self-control resources become depleted and influence subsequent behavior when participants perform verbal working memory or spatial working memory under high and lowwithdrawal-motivated negative emotions. Experiment3 examined whether self-control resources become depleted and influence subsequent behavior when participants different in cognitive styles perform verbal working memory or spatial working memory under low approach-motivated positive emotion.Experiment1 suggested that under low approach-motivated positive state, after performing verbal working memory, Stroop score was lower than under spatial working memory, under high approach-motivated positive state, after performing verbal and spatial working memory, Stroop scores were nonsignificant. That is, low approach-motivated positive state and verbal working memory are emotion-cognition alignment, promoting behavioral control. Experiment2 suggested that under low withdrawal-motivated negative state, after performing spatial working memory, Stroop score was lower than under verbal working memory, under high withdrawal-motivated negative state, after performing verbal and spatial working memory, Stroop scores were nonsignificant. That is, low withdrawal-motivated negative state and spatial working memory were emotion-cognition alignment, promoting behavioral control. Experiment3 suggested that under low approach-motivated positive state, after performing verbal working memory, Stroop score was lower than after performing spacial working memory in field-dependent participants, after performing verbal and spacial working memory, Stroop scores were nonsignificant in field-independent participants. That is, field-dependent participants were affected by low approach-motivated positive state and working memory compatibility.Taken together, These results showed that the effect of emotion-cognition compatibility on self control resources affected by motivation dimensions, low approach-motivated positive emotions and verbal working memory, low withdrawal-motivated negative state and spatial working memory were emotion-cognition alignment condition, self-control resources become saved, promoting behavioral control. The results extended the motivational dimensional model and depended the study of emotion and working memory compatibility to a certain extent.
