An Investigation On The Genesis Of British Science Fiction 'New Wave' Movement

The ‘New Wave' movement which has lasted for more than ten years began and prospered in the 1960 s.It was a large-scale science fiction movement after the ‘Golden Age'which had been conducted by John W.Campbell.As a result of this movement,the science fiction presented its newly invented style and content,largely broadened its connotation while laid the solid foundation for the later science fiction movements.So it is worthwhile to make a focused investigation on this special literary movement and the period which links the past with the future.This thesis tries to explore and analyze the genesis of the ‘New Wave' movement in the field of science fiction,especially focus on discovering the underlying causes and interpreting its enlightenment.Besides,because this movement mainly began and prospered in Great Britain,so the thesis will discuss it in the field of British science fiction.The whole thesis is composed of five chapters.Chapter One overviews the science fiction's history and its connotation,to summarize the ‘New Wave' movement and to sort out both the domestic and overseas discoveries of this movement.Chapter Two discusses the genesis of the ‘New Wave'from the perspective of literature,believing that it is mainly divided into the British mainstream literature,the science fiction of the ‘Golden Age',Ballard's Inner Space theory and Gothic novel and fantasy fictions.Chapter Three discusses the genesis from the perspective of British historical background,including the social situation,culture,technology,pulps,economics and international status and religion,so as to deliberately demonstrate the reasons with the help of the existing research findings and the new discoveries.Chapter Four briefly lists the enlightenment of the discovery of the ‘New Wave' movement,then discusses the factors which can have impact on the science fiction's development and transformation,while briefly shows its enlightenment to the Chinese science fiction.Chapter Five concludes the whole thesis.The ‘New Wave' movement is an unique movement in the science fiction that can not be ignored,the exploration of its genesis and its enlightenment can be very necessary and important in theory and implementation.In a word,this thesis intends to investigate the ‘New Wave' movement from the Chinese perspective,mainly explores it's genesis,discovers it's enlightenment,then discusses the factors which can impact on the science fiction's development and transformation.
