The Study On Wu Changshuo And Seal Calligraphy

Wu Changshuo is regarded as one of the most significant person in Late Qing Dynasty for the reason that he devotes himself to studying calligraphy,especially Seal calligraphy.Therefore,we can think of Wu Changshuo at once as soon as talking about it,which shows that his creative change on Seal calligraphy leaves a far reaching impact on those people who are interested in this style of calligraphy.On the basis of reading a great number of documents,this paper will take the reasons why Wu Changshuo can make great achievements on Seal calligraphy as the research object.In order to conduct a thorough analysis on this famous calligrapher,this thesis is divided into three chapters.In the first chapter,based on the background of early Tang Dynasty,the author explores the reasons why the Seal calligraphy fails to attract enough attentions of the calligraphers in the Late Qing Dynasty although this kind of calligraphy has come into existence.The reasons are that the people in that time are setting their minds on the poetry and epigraphy and the changing of the Seal calligraphy.In the second chapter,the author explores the background of the Qing Dynasty.After the studying,the author finds that typology,including inscription,philology are cominginto being,the calligraphy is declining,and stelae is thriving,which provide a golden opportunity to the development of Seal calligraphy.Therefor,there are a growing number of calligraphers starting to study Seal calligraphy,such as : Deng Shiru,Yang Yisun,Wu Dacheng,and so forth.In this chapter,the author also conducts a exhaustive analysis on those three famous calligraphers.In the third part,the author illustrates the reasons why Wu Changshuo can achieve success on Seal calligraphy.Through conducting an analysis,we can find that the reason is that he not only spares no effort to study predecessors,but also makes great efforts to create some masterpieces and break the boundary the predecessors set up.At the same time,he leaves a far--reaching impact on those who are interested in calligraphy.By making a thorough analysis of the Seal characters written by Wu Changshuo,this thesis hopes to provide some sparkling ideas to those scholars who are fond of Seal calligraphy and eager to study it.
