Since reform and opening up in 1978, China's inbound tourism has witnessed a rapid development. Due to the language barrier and cultural difference, the translations of public signs in scenic spots are particularly important for foreign visitors. These translations should convey information accurately, bring convenience to visitors and spread Chinese culture. However, nowadays there are large numbers of unqualified translations everywhere. Therefore it is necessary and urgent to regulate the translation of public signs in scenic spots.Based on a large amount of translations collected in scenic spots of Kaifeng, this research aims to explore how skopos theory can provide guidance on the Chinese-English translation of public signs in scenic spots. Errors in the collected translations are classified and reasons are identified accordingly. The thesis also offers specific translation strategies which are illustrated through the comparison of unqualified translations and revised ones, proving the skopos theory can provide effective guidance. In the end the author provides some advice on jointly improving the translation of public signs in scenic spots for parties concerned.
