Martha P.Y. Cheung is a fruitful translator and scholar of translation studies, who made great contribution in researches of translation studies and the transmission of Chinese discourse on translation. Her special cultural identity of being influenced by Hong Kong post-colonial culture and the experience of learning western literature theory makes it accessible for her to observe the subject of reviving Chinese traditional translation studies in an exclusive sight. Martha P.Y. Cheung innovatively put pushing-hands of Tai chi as an approach into the research of translation studies, which brings vigor into the research of translation studies. At the same time, she released the charm of Chinese discourse on translation. Her explanation of establishing the system of Chinese discourse on translation helps to inherit and develop Chinese traditional translation studies by integrating western and Chinese thinking modes. This thesis makes an attempt to comb her views and insights on translation studies, affirming her contribution and manifesting her unique status in the development of Chinese translation studies. There are comparatively less researchers who have done comprehensive and systematical studies on her. Using Descriptive Translation Studies, this thesis also tries to give objective evaluation to try to do systematic research and make objective comments on her ideas on translation. This thesis analyzes Martha P.Y. Cheung's thoughts on translation from three aspects, including the pushing-hands approach of Tai chi as a new approach to translation studies, her suggestions on the construction of Chinese discourse on translation and the significance of editing with annotations and commentaries in translation.Through describing the enlightenment of pushing-hands approach of Tai chi as a new approach in translation studies and analyzing the reason of establishing the system of Chinese discourse on translation and the features, reasons and significance of editing translation with annotations and commentaries, this thesis makes objective comments on Martha P.Y. Cheung's views on translation. Moreover, it analyzes the rationality of applying pushing-hands approach to translation history studies as well as the particularity of Chinese discourse on translation and comes up with thinking on Chinese translation studies.Though there are limitations in her views on translation, Martha P.Y. Cheung made great contribution inheriting and developing traditional Chinese translation theories. Her thoughts on translation are treasures that are left for us to inherit and develop. This thesis does the research on Martha P.Y. Cheung from the angle of Descriptive Translation Studies, expecting to provide help for my successors to do further researches on her.
