A Report On The Translation Of Ancient Villages And Towns In Hunan Province (Excerpts)

With its increasing comprehensive national strength and ever-growing international status, China attracts a rising number of foreign people who show strong interest in Chinese excellent traditional culture, especially its extensive and profound regional culture with a long history. And it is an increasingly important task for China to strength the transmission and exportation of our own distinctive national and regional culture as China intends to expand its international impact and reshape the image of great cultural nation.In this paper, the author aims to analyze and explore the Chinese-English translation strategy on regional culture texts through translating the original text of the five ancient villages and towns, which is excerpted from the book of Ancient Villages and Towns in Hunan Province, including the Weishan Village in Liling City,Shujiatang Village in Fenghuang County, the Tantou Town in Longhui County, the Jinggang Town in Wangcheng County as well as the Hongjiang Town in Huaihua City.Each of them is unique and has its own characteristics, showing strong local folklore cultures.The paper consists of four parts. The first part includes the background, the goal of the translation task and introduces the applied theory. Then the second part briefly introduces the translation procedure, including preparation before translation,translation process and revise after translation. As the key part of the report, the third part analyzes in details the translation difficulties under the guidance of the Skopos Theory. In this part, the author mainly manages to explore specific translating strategies on proper nouns, Chinese four-character structures, culture-loaded words on historic buildings and special Chinese sentences. The last part makes a conclusion of the report.The author makes briefly analysis and researches based on the translation ofAncient Villages and Towns in Hunan Province in this paper. It aims to promote the intercultural communication of Hunan Culture and the cultural communication between Chinese and western people by introducing Hunan Culture, one of the distinctive Chinese regional cultures. The author hopes that the paper can provide some beneficial reference for the similar practice and arouse more attention and protection awareness on regional cultures in China.
