A Report On The Translation Of Contemporary Marxist Theory: A Reader(Chapter Twenty)

This report is based on the translation project of Chapter Twenty “Misplaced Ideas:Literature and Society in Late-Nineteenth-Century Brazil” in Contemporary Marxist Theory: A Reader. This volume brings together works written by international theorists since the fall of the Berlin Wall, showing how today crisis-ridden global capitalism is making Marxist theory more relevant and necessary than ever. This collection of key texts by prominent and lesser-known thinkers from Latin America, Asia, Africa,America, and Europe showcases an area of scholarly analysis whose impact on academic and popular discourses as well as political action will only grow in the coming years.Chapter Twenty “Misplaced Ideas: Literature and Society in Late-Nineteenth-Century Brazil” of the volume comes from Misplaced Ideas: Essays on Brazilian Culture, which was published in 1992, whose writer is Roberto Schwarz, a literary critic and retired professor of Literary Theory Brazilian. Roberto Schwarz mainly discusses the differences between Brazilian literature and social reality in 19 th century in Brazil. During the last phase of the 19 th century, internal political debate was focused on the issue of slavery. Even though the Atlantic slave trade was stopped in1850, legal dismantling of slavery was abolished by institution till May, 1888. In this historical background, Roberto Schwarz analyses historical social reality of the late 19 th century in the viewpoint of Marxist theory.This report makes a thorough review of the translation practice from translation difficulties, pre-translation preparation respectively and introduces the background,significance and aim and structure of the translation report, The author generally analyzes linguistic features of the book and figures of speech in Chapter Twenty, In the translation process, the author expounds his handling of translation methods with many examples from source text, aiming at generating some solutions for readers when they translate similar passages. The author summarizes post-translation reflection obtained from this translation project.
