A Report On C-E Translation Of An Introduction To Lushan White Deer Grotto Academy From Perspective Of Translation Meme Theory

Memetics was put forward in late 20 th century, which was a subject based on Darwinian's theory of evolution to explain culture rules. Memetics points out that culture factor is a sort of element which is similar with gene. It provides a new angle for the researches in different cultural fields. Chesterman combines translation and meme to argue that translation is actually a process of copying, transforming and transferring memes. He summarizes three core concepts of Translation Meme Theory: value meme, norm meme and strategy meme.Cultural touristic material refers to the tourist promotional material with rich cultural information, which plays an important role in tourism development and is a significant medium to spread domestic culture. Touristic materials are usually related with history, geographical condition and culture to take the responsibility of publicity and introduction. A major feature of Chinese cultural touristic material is employing numerous poetry, classics and masterpieces in texts.Based on the author's translation practice, the research attempts to probe the C-E translation of cultural touristic material instructed by Chesterman's Meme Theory. The thesis firstly reviews the development and formation of Memetics, and specifically discuss the significance, characteristics and classifications of norm memes and strategy memes which are applied in the translation practice.; secondly, on the basis of the analysis of features of cultural tourist material, employing Chesterman's Translation Meme Theory into translation practice to have a store of important memes, locate memes and produce strong memes before practice. Thirdly, during translating period, selecting appropriate translation strategy memes to instruct the practice from form, content and message levels, in order to achieve the purposes ruled by norm memes.The findings and implications of the practice and research are summarized as follows:Firstly, the strategy memes could act on three levels: syntactic strategy memes act on form level, semantic strategy memes act on content level and pragmatic strategy memes act on message level; secondly, different strategy memes could be combined together to ensure the meme's copying and spreading; thirdly, not all the strategy memes could be applied to the translation of cultural tourist material. In addition, the thesis also concludes the translation procedures under instruction of Memetics: accepting and storing memes, decoding and recording memes, expressing memes and spreading memes. Finally, the thesis summarizes some cultural differences and translation skills when handling the cultural factors in tourist material.The study is a tentative one for the use of Memetic strategies in the translation practice of cultural tourist material. It inevitably has some limitations while endeavoring to propose some useful suggestions to avoid the same shortcomings in the future studies and provide stronger theory basis in using translation strategies.
