As China increases its comprehensive strength and intensifies interaction with other countries in the world in recent years, China enjoys an increasingly higher reputation in international communities than ever. As one of the important media to make China known to the world, political materials for publicity purpose(PMPs) as well as their translation exert great influence upon the effect of publicity. In view of the differences in cultural background, translator?s subjectivity and text stylistics, many existed versions of PMPs are of poor quality; translation of PMPs has attracted much attention of translators as well as researchers in the field of translation studies. In the field of domestic translation studies, “adequate” translation seems to be a notion which dominates the translation as well as translation studies in China. In translating political materials for publicity purpose, translators placed much weight on faithfulness to original texts while failed to take into account of the differences of foreign readers in cultural background, way of thinking, and interest in reading, which made it difficult for the translated version of PMPs to be well recognized. Translation variation theory offers a new perspective for translators to overcome the failures there above.According to translation variation theory, translators have to pay more attention to satisfying readers? needs, which coincides with the C-E translation of political materials for publicity purpose: to make foreign readers to get a clearer picture of the policies implemented in China. As partial negation to the original texts, translation variation theory requires translators choose and adopt flexible techniques to facilitate potential readers while translating political materials for publicity purpose. After a brief introduction to research purpose, research method, research scope as well as overall research framework, the thesis defines and characterizes political materials for publicity purpose at linguistic, syntactic and stylistic level. The thesis focuses on the possibility of applying translation variation theory to the C-E translation of PMPs after examining the limitations of German functionalism, manipulation theory and relevance theory when they are applied to the researches of the like. After a description of theoretical essentials of translation variation theory, the thesis makes an in-depth analysis on variations as occurred to the translation of PMPs from linguistic, semantic, stylistic and rhetorical perspective. Under the guidance of translation variation theory, translators may decide to choose such techniques as amplification, omission, condensed translation, edited translation, selected translation adapted translation, and explanatory translation while they are engaging themselves in translating political materials for publicity purpose.
