Chinese modern graphic design is showing a trend of sameness and lacks in innovation due to the influence of new ideas and design concepts. However, Chinese traditional graphic is gradually showing its unique charm in the current international trend as a kind of ethnic graphic language. It has become a popular trend in the field of graphic design to design works full of typical Chinese style with the use of excellent traditional Chinese graphic symbol elements.The thesis mainly conducts a special study of the application of Tai chi graphics, the most beautiful and harmonious Chinese picture in modern graphic design. The philosophy of unity out of opposites, two from one, perpetual motion and life circle implied in the Tai chi graphics has been accepted and recognized by more and more people. The purpose of the research is to provide innovative design ideas and expression techniques for the modern graphic design by digging out the aesthetic characteristics and symbolic meaning inherent in the Tai chi graphics. The thesis gives a detailed description of the aesthetic characteristics of Tai chi graphics from five aspects of beauty, namely, beauty of equilibrium, of change, of structure, of simplicity and of fullness and presents the mysterious ancient graphics of Tai chi in a more exquisite manner. The Tai chi graphics offers new design concepts and expression methods for the modern graphic design as it is rich in ethic heritage and visual culture connotations and has a strong force of plasticity and expression in terms of form, meaning and power.Culture is the essence in design, and only by adhering to the cultural connotation as the core of the design work can it be a real sign of progress of the era. The present emphasis and research on the traditional graphics in China should be directed at recreation and innovative expression of the traditional graphic symbols, which endows Chinese design with its unique vitality and characteristics in the wave of internationalization. Thus, the western design ideas should be imitated and absorbed alternatively in order to make Chinese graphic design show the essence of its traditional culture and stand on its own among the international art circle.
