A Study On The Translation Strategies Of Moment In Peking From The Perspective Of Functional Equivalence

With the facilitation of cultural globalization, people gradually pay more attention to culture-loaded terms. Moment in Peking was originally created by Lin Yutang in English. The novel depicts the love and hatred among three families, the Yaos, Zengs, and Nius amidst the chaos and turmoil from the Boxer Rebellion in 1901 to the end of the anti-Japanese War. The background of this novel embodies Yuan Shikai’s usurpation, Zhang Xun’s restoration, May 4th movement and the World War Two and so on, which shows the historical changes of Chinese society in a panoramic way. Therefore, it contains distinct era characteristics and entails many culture-loaded words.Culture-loaded terms can be divided into five types as follows:ecological culture, material culture, social culture, religious culture and linguistic culture. Translation strategies applied in the process of translation mainly include literal translation, transliteration, free translation, ellipsis, filling, replacement, etc. Translation strategies may be single or multiple. Appropriate translation strategies can make translation version linguistic and cultural.Based on theoretical foundation of functional equivalence, the research mainly focuses on translation strategies of culture-loaded terms in Moment in Peking. The research shows that the translation strategies of culture-loaded terms have a relation with the classification of culture-loaded terms. This thesis summarizes translation strategies under the classification of culture-loaded terms, and expounds the guiding role of functional equivalence in process of translation. Hopefully, this thesis will provide some thinking patterns for analysis and application of culture-loaded terms, and give some references for the future study.
