Application Of Interpretive Theory In Escort Interpreting:A Report On My Interpreting Project For A Canadian Group

As the trend for globalization further develops, frequent cross-cultural communication is involved. Globalization has brought language learners both opportunities and challenges. Interpreting has been frequently used in business negotiations and cultural exchanges. Escort interpreting demands interpreters' interpreting skills and strong capacity to deal with difficult situations, for the occasion is informal with various topics.Based on the author's interpreting experience as an escort interpreter and the understanding of Interpretive Theory, this report is going to analyze and discuss the problems the author encountered in the interpreting task in an attempt to explore some effective solutions to the problems. Basically there are two causes for the problems during interpreting: lack of expertise and cultural information deficiency. According to Interpretive Theory, sense, or the message, should be of top priority for the communication. Thus those problems can be solved by means of our flexible choice of proper techniques such as omission, amplification and transliteration plus explanation.The following findings can be generated from the analysis of experience. Firstly,the stress on sense of Interpretive Theory can in a sense direct the practice of escort interpreting. Secondly, interpreters should constantly keep in mind the importance of the message and do not confine themselves only to language form. Interpreters should combine both linguistic knowledge and non-linguistic knowledge and apply multiple techniques flexibly to tackle the problems in interpreting. Thirdly, interpreters need to have certain professional knowledge and an overall understanding when it comes to expertise-related interpreting tasks. It is wise to be fully prepared before taking on an expertise-related interpreting task. Finally, the accumulation of cultural knowledge and the mastery of cross-cultural communication skills are two life-long tasks. To be a dedicated interpreter means to be a dedicated life-long learner.This report is far less than illuminating due to the limitations of the author's interpreting experience and academic accomplishment. However hopefully it canoffer some advice for expertise-related escort interpreting and serve as a reference for studies on other types of interpreting.
