It is a translation report on Chapter 2 in “The Ethnography of Communication” of The Sociolinguistics of Language by Ralph Fasold. This monograph was translated by our group which consists of six translators. And I translated Chapter II that covers more than ten thousand words which meets the requirement for words of thesis. This chapter mainly explores that distinguished speech community owns different speaking rules which are related with their beliefs and values of that community.During the process of of ethnography communication study, the author firstly introduces three basic concepts in this chapter:speech community, situation, event and act;ethnography of communication study mode,Which is composed of eight basic elements of speaking, namely situation, participants, ends, act sequence, key, instrumentalities, norms and genres. In the process of translation,I mainly took the communicative translation theory of Peter Newmark as the theory background, mainly using literal translation combining with free translation, addition, omission etc.;it puts the most emphasis on the reading effect of readers, striving to render it in most readable and natural Chinese. Moreover, the whole process of translation such as its guiding theory and approaches the translator chose, the difficulties encountered and solutions, all of these questions will be reflected in this report in detail. This translation practice helps me improve my translation ability and enrich my knowledge on sociolinguistics. The text shows me what academic writing is like, which will be beneficial for my future translation practices.
