This is a translation report concerning Chapter 1 of The Sociolinguistics of Language written by Ralph Fasold. After searching the Internet,I find that there is no English version of this book in China.Chapter 1 explains the most common phenomenon of Addressing Forms in Sociolinguistics. With many examples illustrating theories listed in the original text, some scholars find it much easier to understand the text.It is a piece of academic writing bearing abstraction and objectivity, which belongs to a typical informative text.According to Reiss’ s text typology, the core of such text is to convey opinions and messages that have the same effect as that in original text, and introduce some theories concerning Sociolinguistics to readers. Therefore,in the course of translation,I make every effort to express the original information in a smooth and coherent way.Combining with the guidance of the Skopostheorie, several translation strategies such as domestication and foreignization, cohesion and coherence, conversion have been adopted to address some difficulties in translation, for example, the translation of terminology, acronym and subordinate clauses. In this way,the Chinese version is better in line with writing practices in targeted culture and the message in original text has been well conveyed.Through translating The Sociolinguistics of Language(Chapter1),the translator deepens her understanding of Sociolinguistics and further improves her translation.
