An Introduction to Sociolinguistics is a sociolinguistics textbook written by Ronald Wardhaugh on the relationship between language and society and the various features of language in social life.The source text belongs to informative text.Based on Newmark's classification of text types,the translator adopts Newmark's communicative translation together with semantic translation as translation strategies.The translator introduces the theoretical knowledge of sociolinguistics to the readers from the aspects of language variation,the relationship between language and culture,ethnography and ethnomethodology,focusing on the analysis of the relationship between language and culture and ethnography,another important field of sociolinguistics research.The translator mainly uses a variety of translation skills,such as semantic extension,conversion,four-character structure,division translation and combination translation to complete the translation report,so as to meet the target language readers' expression habits.The translation report mainly contains five parts: introduction of the translation text,introduction of translation process,translation theory,practical application and summary of translation practice.The translator mainly introduces the methods and translation strategies in the process of translation,the difficulties encountered,the solutions and the comprehension of translation.For the translator,the translation of this book can correspondingly improve the understanding of translation and translation level,accumulate experience in translation,and have a profound understanding of sociolinguistics.
