With the furthering reform and opening-up policy, China has been involved in an increasing communication with other regions and countries in the world. During this process, simultaneous interpreting(SI) now has become the main mode of interpretation for all kinds of world conferences. As the golden principle of SI, the principle of syntactic linearity is widely adopted. The principle of syntactic linearity is supposed to help reduce the adjustment of word sequence, release the burden on the interpreters' short-memory so as to promote the smoothness of SI. However, there are still some urgent problems to be solved due to the differences between Chinese and English in terms of syntax, word order and etc. as well as the interpreters' distribution of effort.Compared with nouns, verbs and etc., prepositions only account for a small part in English. However, they are concise and powerful. Comparatively speaking, the study on the English prepositions in SI is far less, especially in the C-E SI. This report aims to analyze the English prepositions in C-E SI. The author collects and analyzes the audio files of 5 student interpreters from their class training and discusses English prepositions in C-E SI under the guidance of the principle of syntactic linearity, with the hope of providing feasible advices for the C-E SI training in the future as well as improving its efficiency. For the sake of more persuasive explanation, this report adopts three methods. The first is theory analysis. It analyzes the theoretical achievements that have been made already. The second is literature analysis. The author sorts out and analyzes useful information by reading relevant literature. The last one is cases analysis. This report lists and analyzes numerous relative recordings of five MTI student interpreters from Grade Two to enhance its logicality and persuasion. The results show that if English prepositions can be skillfully used under the guidance of the principle of syntactic linearity, it is beneficial for the C-E SI. For example, the adoption of English prepositions can make the expression more concise, reduce the adjustment of word order and also further comply with the English expression.Analysis of English prepositions also helps interpreters gain a better understanding ofEnglish prepositions and C-E SI, thus improving the quality of C-E SI.
