A Study Of Syntactic Linearity Principle In Chinese-English Simultaneous Interpreting Under Effort Model

Effort Model,is commonly believed as a theory of cognitive science,comes into being with the practice and study of interpreting activities.Meanwhile,Gile’s insights trigger one of the deepening approaches to professional studies on simultaneous interpreting basically recognized in the academic circle.Admittedly,syntactic linearity principle,as a feasible way utilized in simultaneous interpreting,can appropriately handle interpreting problems mentioned in Effort Model.Nevertheless,relative literature shows that few studies have ever discussed the application of syntactic linearity principle in simultaneous interpreting under Effort Model,especially analysis on Chinese to English simultaneous interpreting,which is far from being comprehensive.Hence,from the perspective of Effort Model,the purpose of this thesis is to conduct an analysis of syntactic linearity principle applied in Press Conferences of Foreign Minister Wang Yi from 2020 to 2021 as research cases of Chinese to English simultaneous interpreting,and to explore more practical meaning and to prove the effectiveness of syntactic linearity principle under Effort Model.The subject matter this thesis is deliberately focused on the following parts:（1）The theoretical foundation of Effort Model in simultaneous interpreting is presented.（2）The feasibility of the study with the application of syntactic linearity principle under Effort Model is tagged.（3）The practical meaning of syntactic linearity principle under Effort Model for interpreters and learners through detailed case analysis and discussion are presented with some specific tactics.The thesis identifies itself as a study both in theoretical and practical approaches,and all the data are originated from the Press Conferences of Foreign Minister Wang Yi from 2020 to 2021.The research questions are as follows:（1）On the one hand,this thesis discusses the necessity and feasibility of the syntactic linearity applied in Chinese to English simultaneous interpreting in-depth,which is the prerequisite to analyzing the data in Chapter Four.On the other hand,several crucial parts in cognitive profess in the Effort Model have been discussed including the interpreting model,processing capacity requirements and two cognitive problem triggers in simultaneous interpreting,and so on.（2）The fourth chapter of the thesis analyzes the whole process of Chinese to English simultaneous interpreting process of foreign minister Wang Yi’s speech in press conferences from 2020 to 2021.Besides,this part discusses the actual effectiveness of the syntactic linearity principle in real interpreting activities at both lexical and syntactic levels,which has been rarely seen in previous studies.This thesis has a promising implication for further studies on the application of syntactic linearity principle in Chinese to English simultaneous interpreting under Effort Model.In addition,speaking practically,the thesis enriches the perspective of Chinese to English simultaneous interpreting,and inspires interpreters and learners to conduct more professional attempts in combination between theory and practices.
