The main focus of this thesis is the application of syntactic linearity principlesto English-Chinese simultaneous interpreting. With ever-closer international ties, simultaneous interpreting has gradually becoming one of the main forms ofinterpreting in international conferences and exchanges. One of the most salientfeatures of SI is instantaneity, which determines the importance of syntactic linearity,a basic principle of SI.The theoretical basis of this thesis is Noam Chomsky’s Minimalist Program andDaniel Gile’s Efforts Model. The Minimalist Program includes many concepts suchas the Principle of Greed, Principle of Procrastinate and Principle of Economy. Allthese principles serve as guidance for successful SI. Based on these principles, thisthesis summarizes and analyzes several techniques of syntactic linearity, includingsegmentation, repetition, addition, deletion and conversion. In order to verify the effectiveness of syntactic linearity, an experiment wasconducted. Based on the2014US president Barack Obama’s State of the Unionaddress and the author’s simultaneous interpretation, the author used techniques ofsyntactic linearity to see if the performance has improved. In conclusion, this thesissummarized this practical experiment and what the author has learned from it, in thehope of improving the quality of interpretation for future reference.
