Martial arts,as one of Chinese traditional sports, are considered as precious heritage with the implication of Chinese people's spirit. Not only do martial arts accumulate thousands of years of ancient Chinese sports culture, but also correlate with traditional philosophy, political ethics, military thoughts, literature and art, medicine and social customs. In a way, martial arts are the cyclopedia of Chinese culture. With the popularization of martial arts,Chinese culture becomes popular in the global society and to some extent promotes international exchanges in many fields. For this reason, translation of terms in martial arts should be highlighted in order to spread Chinese culture, and to promote international exchanges in the whole world. However,a careful review of domestic studies on this topic indicates that there are insufficient research achievements.Firstly, research in this field has been overlooked in China for a long time and there are very few articles and publications on translation of martial arts.Secondly,in all these few articles translation strategies are discussed in a restricted scope without a sound and systematic theoretical framework.Furthermore, such articles are short of insights into such aspects as the features and classifications of terms in martial arts, and proper translation strategies and skills. Therefore, current theoretical studies on translation of terms in martial arts are not quite helpful in practice. In view of that, this paper makes the following attempts, where the innovations lie: Based on the German Skopos theory, the paper tries to offer a systematic and comprehensive analysis of the translation of terms in martial arts. The thesis consists of five chapters.Chapter one introduces the background information of the thesis, that is,the brief description of the task, objectives of the research and the significance of the project. The second chapter deals with the preparatory work before the drafting of the essay, covering previous studies of translating terms in martial arts at home and abroad, features and classification of terms in martial arts in order to better apply the relevant translation theories to guide the translation practice. The third chapter plays a role in elaborating the theoretical framework on which the project is based, such as translation strategies and some specific skills under the guidance of the relevant theory. Then Chapter four begins to carry on the case analysis to the report. The last chapter makes a summary of the whole thesis. With emphasis on the application of Skopos theory in the translation practice through carefully analyzing features and classification of terms, the report summarizes that, under the guidance of documentary translation and instrumental translation in Skopos theory, translation of terms in martial arts would be better performed by flexibly adopting the following translation skills. For the strategy of documentary translation, skills such as literal translation, transliteration plus annotation help to preserve the original images and linguistic features in the source text, which would be suitable for the translation of technical terms for traditional martial arts and theoretical terms in martial arts. For the strategy of instrumental translation,it is easier to be accepted by the target language readers so as to reach the aim of intercultural communication through free translation and other translation skills, which will be appropriate for the translation of technical terms for competitive martial arts.
