| The development of the movie industry and the constant advancement of globalization make it possible for movies from various nations to be introduced to other countries, which allows movies to entertain more audience around the world and helps spread the culture contained in them in an indirect manner. In the process of the movie export, the translation of movie scripts plays an important role. Chinese martial arts are one of the main themes of Chinese movies, and culture-loaded words in martial arts movie scripts contain much Chinese culture, which is worth discussing.However, currently, domestic research on culture-loaded words mainly focuses on those in martial arts novels. In the translation of martial arts movie scripts, how to translate the culture-loaded words in them while considering the translation principles of movie scripts and overcoming great cultural differences is worth exploring.Based on a translation practice of a martial arts movie script, The Legendary Journey of a Wild Goose-like Swordswoman, this report is aimed at solving the difficulty encountered in translation, namely, the English translation of Chinese culture-loaded words in them. Through analyzing the content, target receptors and the main function of the target text and the client’s requirements on it, as well as summarizing and referring to the translation of culture-loaded words in a successful parallel text, this report proposes to study the Chinese to English translation of culture-loaded words in martial arts movie scripts from the perspective of functional equivalence theory that emphasizes receptors’ response. This report suggests that the translation of culture-loaded words in martial arts movie scripts should adhere to the principles of popularization, conciseness, and cultural richness, and puts forward four main translation methods for them, including literal translation, substitution,paraphrase, and transliteration, which are expected to be helpful to future translation of such texts. |
