As translation studies continue, the scope of translation studies is constantly expanding. The researches on translation ethics are gradually becoming focus of attention and described as “ethical turn” in translation studies. It mainly focuses on the rules and laws that control translators and regulate all the complex relationships that are related to translation.Hereafter, domestic and overseas scholars put forward their respective views on translation ethics, among which Chesterman’s thoughts can be counted as the most influential in the academia. He systematically expounded on translation ethics and outlined five models, namely, ethics of representation, ethics of service, ethics of communication,norm-based ethics as well as ethics of commitment, which provided us a brand new perspective for studying translation theories and practice.Xiangxi Sanji is composed of eleven articles, which are translated by Yang Xianyi and his wife Gladys Yang.Their English version of Xiangxi Sanji not only conveys the ideological content of the original and language style, but also reflects the unique alien culture. However, scholars paid little attention to the English version at home and abroad, few of them studied the English version from the perspective of translation ethics.Grounded on Chesterman’s ideas on translation ethics, the thesis attempts to explore the translation strategies employed by the translators and the manifestation of the translation ethics models in the English version of Xiangxi Sanji. The author finally discovers that the translators mainly adopt the strategy of foreignization and the method of transliteration, and that the English version remarkably embodies the ethics of representation in aesthetic prospect, linguistic form and cultural specific, which truthfully reveals the exotic world of west Hunan to the target readers.Meanwhile, the translators also adopt the method of liberal translation and follow the ethics of service, ethics of communication, the norm-based ethics as well as ethics of commitment in order to promote the cultural communication and guarantee the readability of the translation.Based on the analysis of the English version of Xiangxi Sanji, the author further discussed the implications of the present study for literary translation from Chinese into English. |
