A Study Of Ren Rongrong's English-chinese Translation Of Children's Literature From The Perspective Of Chesterman's Models Of Translation Ethics

Under the background of economic globalization and cultural pluralism,not only has everything been being closely bound up with each other but also exchanges in culture have been deepening day by day.In consideration that literature is a powerful carrier for spreading and developing culture,the demand of literature is increasing.So does children's literature,which is a major branch of literature.It is well known that intercultural communication,including exchanges in culture and communication between literature,can not be separated from translation.What's more,modern Chinese children's literature started at the period of May Fourth Movement in 1919 and independent translation of children's literature began in 1859.Ren Rongrong(Ren)is the mainstay in the long history of modern children's literary creation and translation.He contributes his whole life to writing and translating children's literature and most majority of his works are loved by the public all around the world.One of them is The Trumpet of the Swan.At present,scholars from home and abroad concentrate mainly on the general description or summary of Ren's translations,while the related study to his translation skills is still in infancy,lacking the guidance of systematic theory.In view that ethics mainly discusses moral principles and basic norms of interpersonal relationships in certain societies,cultural communication is related to interpersonal relationship so that its orderly conduct is based upon certain values,morality and ethics.As intercultural communication,translation is also influenced and restricted by ethics.In addition to standardize translation activities,the application of this theory can regulates the subject of translation,establishing marketing orders.Since the “cultural turn” of translation studies in the seventies and eighties of the last century,Antoine Berman originally proposed translation ethics in 1984,conforming to the historical trend of the time.And it resulted in a great disturbance of translation field,namely,analysis on translation from an ethical perspective.Pimm,Venuti and Chesterman are representative figures of translation ethics.Thereinto,Chesterman put forward five models of translation ethics,including ethics of representation,ethics of service,ethics of communication,norm-based ethics and ethics of commitment.What's more,Chesterman's models of translation ethics breaks through the traditional research direction of translation ethics,gets rid of the bondage of traditional “fidelity” principle,and transfers the research focus of translation ethics from “source language or target language” to “translator”.The ethical model has promoted translation ethics to a new height and provided a new idea for translation research and practice.This thesis explores the embodiment of translation ethics in Ren's translation of children's literature from the perspective of translation ethics,taking The Trumpet of the Swan as an example.So that it may provide a new perspective for studying Ren's translation of children's literature.On account of five models of translation ethics,it's found that Ren adopts various translation strategies and methods,such as domestication and foreignization,literal translation and free translation,annotation,rhyme,colloquial expression and so on.Nevertheless,Ren doesn't follow the Chesteman's models of translation ethics to carry on the mechanical translation.Ren gives priority to extra-textual translation ethics,namely,ethics of service and ethics of communication,norm-based ethics and ethics of commitment while adopting the ethics of representation for supplementation.It provides a new idea for further study to research Ren's translation.
