A Practice Report On The E-C Translation Of Walkaway(An Excerpt) From The Perspective Of Chesterman's Models Of Translation Ethics

Walkaway is a science fiction(SF)novel for adults by a Canadian science fiction writer Cory Doctorow.It tells a hard-utopian story about a world in the future.The story is imaginative and thought-provoking,leading people to ponder the relationship between humans and robots in the future technological world.And I have translated its third chapter to arouse Chinese readers' interests in reading foreign science fiction and enrich their reading options.Translation ethics was a major shift in translation studies,making translation no longer a simple switch between two different languages,but a more complex manipulation process involving translation selection,translators,editors and publishers.In this area,Andrew Chesterman had the most thorough and comprehensive discussion.On the basis of Gideon Turi's research and theories,Chesterman proposed five models of translation ethics.Science fiction,a special genre,boasting literary and scientific features,not only broadens readers' horizons,but also triggers people's deep thinking on social issues.With my translation of the third chapter of Walkaway as the research subject,this report takes Chesterman's five models of translation ethics as its theoretical guidance,so as to verify their applicability to SF translation,and explore some appropriate strategies for translation of science fiction.In this report,the source text is generally divided into three sections in accordance with the features of scientificity and literariness,namely,scientific language and translation ethics,literary language and translation ethics,and the translator's competence and the commitment model of ethics.And the first two sections are further divided into several sub-sections respectively:proper nouns,special terms,the descriptions of scenery and characters and psychology and dialogues according to the features of scientific and literary languages.Then each of them is matched up with corresponding model of ethics.Lastly,the commitment model of ethics is applied to the situations where the other four may overlap or clash.And the author of this report selects some examples from the translation of Walkaway to study respectively under the guidance of five models,as a way to prove that in the translation,the features of the original text,the different cultures and values between China and the West should be taken into consideration.Therefore,all kinds of translation strategies for translating science fiction must be properly adopted to conform to the models of translation ethics.To sum up,in accordance with the norm-based model of ethics,proper nouns are translated literally by adopting the strategy of foreignization.Special vocabulary is translated by paraphrasing and the strategy of domestication following the communication model of ethics.According to the service model of ethics,the descriptions of scenery and characters are translated literally by the strategy of domestication.And the descriptions of psychology and dialogues are translated literally by the strategy of domestication following the representation model of ethics.Lastly,when the four models overlap or conflict in specific situations,the translator should give priority to certain model and adopt various strategies.Finally,a summary of the research is made to offer some experience for future work and reference for others who work on SF translation.The originality of this paper consists in expanding the scope of application of Chesterman's models of translation ethics and generalizing appropriate strategies for SF translation into Chinese.
