Based on the mono-culture criteria set by May Fourth literature, people's mind was seriously limited, therefore the writers of The Mandarin Duck and Butterfly School have long been viewed as the counter-current of culture,so few researchers have paid attention to the translation activities of the Butterfly school. However,to some extent, its authors have made indelible contributions to the introduction of numerous foreign literary works and laid a foundation for the modernization of Chinese literature. Therefore the literary activities made by the Butterfly School writers have exerted great impact on the following literary works.Zhou Shoujuan is a translator, writer as well as an editor, and he has both translated and created a large amount of literary works that cover various themes and genres, which makes great contributions to the introduction of foreign literature. However,as a representative of the Butterfly school,he is still severely criticized, thus the study of Zhou's translation activities is in lack of fair and objective evaluations. The Saturday is one of the most popular and representative journals of the Butterfly school which witnessed the shift of Zhou's translation from immature to mature. The first and second one hundred issues of The Saturday were launching before and after the New Culture Movement——the most turbulent times in modern Chinese literature. Therefore, whether from the perspective of ideology or poetics, the journal as well as Zhou was undertaking dramatic changes during that very period of time. The shift of Zhou Shoujuan's choice in The Saturday,in fact, marks the change of social ideological trends.Andre Lefevere,an American translation theorist, provides a new perspective for the study of literary translation. He states that “all rewritings, whatever their intentions, reflect a certain ideology and a poeticsand as such manipulate literature to function in a given society in a given way” and translation is in fact the rewriting of an original text.Hence,Lefevere's rewriting theory allows us to analyze translation activities from the cultural perspective in different times. This thesis attempts to make a detailed analysis and comparison on Zhou Shoujuan's translation in The Saturday from the major control factors of rewriting theory, with the purpose of fully demonstrating the interwoven influence between Zhou's translation and the rewriting theory.
