Abstract/Summary:
At the beginning of the 20 th century,New Culture Movement,an enlightening movement, broke out in China..This movement advocated democracy and science, eliminated the feudal imperial dominance, and at the same time pushed forward the development of China’s natural science. What is more,it also promoted China’s transition to a modern democratic nation. This period was not only the turning point of Chinese history, but also an important period of prosperity in translation,in which the media such as magazines and journals played an important role in the occurrence, development and success of new culture and literature.Among all the magazines and journals, the two journals,New Youth as the base of New Culture Movement and the large comprehensive journal Eastern Miscellany with the longest existing time in Chinese journal history are important both in Chinese literary history and its translation history. What is more, there are many translated works in these two journals.Andre Lefevere and Susan Bassnett pointed out that “translation is not done in a vacuum”.To achieve a certain purpose, the translator and/or the rewriter filter translated works through the selection of source-text,and they are also constrained by the ideology and poetics of the target culture.Besides,Lefevere emphasizes the manipulation of ideology, poetics and patronage during the process of translation in Translation,Rewriting and the Manipulation of Literary Fame. And the first step of translation is the selection of source-text,which definitely is influenced by these three factors, especially patronage.During the reading of related works, the author comes across a big argument held between editors of these two journals on the problem of the relationship between Chinese and Western culture, which has caused a sensation at that time in literary circle.Since editors of these two journals held different opinions on the relationship between Chinese culture and Western culture,so do they have differences in the selection of source-texts?To find the answer to the question,I studied the translated literary works in New Youth and Eastern Miscellany----two influencing journals in this period, compared and analyzed the source-text selection in culture, genre and theme of the literary works in these two journals, and thus observed the influence of patronage----one of the three control factors put forward by Lefevere. It turns out that the selection of source-text is by no means at random in culture, genre and theme. It is affected and manipulated by thepatronage, namely the journal itself and the editor, apart from the common environment and other two factors.
