In the New Culture Movement,open-minded intellectuals played a crucial role in emancipating people's mind and promoting literature, which has been studied by quite a lot of scholars. However, the researches on annotations in translated works(hereafter referred to as annotations)are few.Annotations are deployed to explain the source text(ST)and express the translator's thoughts. In other words, annotations can directly reflect the translator's ideology. Therefore, this thesis attempts to analyze annotations from the perspective of rewriting theory. This thesis takes the annotations in New Youth and The Eastern Miscellany as cases and rewriting theory as the theoretical framework.Firstly, the author introduces the necessities, categories and functions of annotations.Secondly, the author analyzes the influence of annotations on Chinese readers from the perspective of ideology, poetics and patronage. In the end,the author draws the following conclusions.First, influenced by ideology, translators translate the works with the embodiment of many similarities with China and emphasize literal translation strategy and explain the implied meaning from which the original meaning reemerges in annotations and retain the forms, which is helpful to promote Chinese literature.Second, manipulated by poetics, translators advocate vernacular and punctuation and promote foreign progressive literature, which is obviously embodied in annotations, and reflects the influence of poetics on Chinese people.Third, influenced by patronage, translators have to meet the requirement of patronage in ideology and poetics. In other words, the ideology, the urgent need for new literary forms, and the protection and supervision of patronage are all embodied in annotations, which has exerted a direct influence on target readers(TR).
