The Research On The Unearthed Boards Of Human Face From Han Frontier In Hexi Area

The Boards of Human Face are the particular objects which were widely used through the Han Frontier in Hexi Area. The functions have been discussed from their first appearing and are not over yet, including several different previous scholars`viewpoints. Unfortunately, there haven't been the systematizes and studies on the Unearthed Boards of Human Face from Han Frontier in Hexi Area according to the current findings. This paper is mainly trying to sort out the discovered materials of the Boards of Human Face according to the excavated sites. Therefore, their properties will be further researched.This paper is divided into three chapters. The first chapter is mainly described that the discovered Boards of Human Face from Han Frontier in Hexi Area are introduced separately according to the places between Juyan and Dunhuang. The second part is about discussing the four functions of The Boards of Human Face with the help of previous scholars` study, including driving away evil; worshipping the gods; military witchcraft and helping people be punished. Moreover, the author evaluates these four views. The third chapter is analyzed The Boards of Human Face's properties from three aspects: the time which was lasted; the places which were discovered and the owner who used.Finally, the purpose of this paper is to provide a new perspective that we can make a further research from the property of the excavated sites to study. From the above discussion, the author considers that The Boards of Human Face should be from the early Western Han Dynasty to the late Eastern Han. Under the influence of witchcraft beliefs, garrison soldiers from Han Frontier in Hexi Area used The Boards of Human Face as the witchcraft tools to stabilize their house, bless themselves and drive out disasters.
