A Report On The Translation Of No Name(Excerpt) In The Perspective Of Semantic Translation And Communicative Translation

Literature maps and crystallizes of cultures, as well as showing spiritual life of people in each country in the world in the form of texts. The rapid development of globalization enables increasingly frequent cultural exchange between countries, and literature becomes an important channel for intercultural communication. Breaking down language barriers is necessary for literature going global; hence the importance of translation. As the time of Western literature entering China grew longer, Chinese readers have changed their attitude from curiosity to enjoying and appreciating, owing to those excellent translations of literary works. Therefore readers demanded higher requirement on quality of literary translation.Translating literary works not only needs to fully display the plot and content of the original text, but also convey feelings and ideas of the author. This requires the translator to be faithful to the original text and to be in accordance with cultural habits of target text readers. So it is essential to combine the two translation strategies(semantic translation and communicative translation) and apply in the translation practice.This report selects the novel No Name by famous British writer Willkie Collins as translation material, and discussed preparation, process and conclusion of the translation practice based on Newmark's theory of semantic translation and communicative translation; and chose cases from the translator's version to analyze in aspects of words, sentences, rhetoric and culture, so as to explore the specific application of semantic translation and communicative translation in this translation project. The translator expects to put forward some opinions valuable for literary translation in later times.
