A Practice Report On The Semantic Conversion And Ellipsis Of Personal Pronoun ‘you' In The Chinese Translation Of Game Set And Match

Tennis is a sport of elegance and intensity which gained more and more attention and affection in China recently.However,it started relatively late in China and is not China's dominant event.So,many tennis enthusiasts and amateurs hope that they can gain the latest tennis techniques and training theories by reading original foreign books at same time of paying close attention to international tennis events.The original text of this practice is the first chapter of Game Set and Match,an English tennis course.By using Christiane Nord's theory of text analysis,this thesis analyzes the original text thoroughly and then figures out the distinguished features and functions of English sports text.Sports English is a kind of English for specific purposes.It has some unique and outstanding features such as mass use of technical terms,proper nouns and abbreviations,concise and clear sentence structures and directive expressions.The original text is an informative text with teaching function,but meanwhile,with evident colloquial expressions,there are a great number of ‘you' and ‘your' used in the text.Therefore,if we want to endow the translation with both practical and aesthetic value,attentions must be paid to the function and features of sports text,and what's more,the translation of personal pronouns in it.This thesis analyzes the difficulties and problems encountered in the translation practice and put forwards the proper solutions.The main difficulty and problem in this practice is the proper translation of ‘you' and ‘your',mainly related to the frequency difference between English and Chinese personal pronouns and the second personal pronoun surpassing its normal reference range.By constructing personal pronouns in Chinese and English,boning up on the references and carding translation theories,the author concludes that these difficulties can be solved by semantic conversion and ellipsis of ‘you' and ‘your'.Case studies show that semantic conversion and ellipsis of ‘you' and ‘your' can make the translation accurate and clear,concise and fluent,at the same time,consistent with the linguistic features of sports text and expression habbits of Chinese.Semantic conversion and ellipsis are meaningful and practical to the Chinese translation of personal pronouns in sports text.
