The Application Of Semantic Orientation Approach In The Chinese-English Translation Of Father’s Return To The Hometown

Drawing on the English translation of a Chinese text titled Father’s Return to the Hometown,this commentary mainly discusses the semantic orientation conversion of two sentence components in the translation.It analyzes the semantic orientation of adverbials and attributes via specific examples,in order to throw a light on ChineseEnglish translation with regard to the handling of modifiers including adverbials and attributes.In the discussion part,this commentary focuses on the direction and number of a sentence component’s semantic orientation as well as explicitness of the semantically oriented item in a sentence revealed in both the original and translated text.In translating Chinese adverbials and attributes,flexible translation methods are found in the translation of the text,such as the addition of implied information,the slight adjustment of sentence structure and the rendition of Chinese adverbials into prepositional phrases.From the perspective of semantic orientation theory,translator can better understand the semantic contents of the original text,especially the semantic orientation of adverbials and attributes,then facilitating the effectiveness of translation.
